How to Make the Ohio Star Quilt Block

This year, for the quilt guild I am apart of, I am providing instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. For the month of December, we learned about the classic Ohio Star Quilt Block.

 Ohio Star Quilt Block

This is a very classic block that great for everyone to know how to do.

For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:

White  4 of 3 1/2 inch squares

White  6 of 4 inch squares

Color  6 of 4 inch squares

Sew:

Using the 4 inch squares, place a white square and a color square right sides together. Draw a line diagonally, corner to corner on the white fabric.

Stitch a scant 1/4 inch away from the line on both sides.

 Half Square Triangle

Cut on the line and press the seam to the dark side.

Trim to 3 1/2 inches square.

Half Square Triangle HST

Repeat till you have 12 half square triangles.

Arrange the half square triangles and the 3 1/2 inch white squares to match the layout of the square.

Stitch blocks together to form rows. Press to alternating sides. Then stitch rows together and give an overall final pressing.

This is classic block that has been designed and created by many people. As I have mentioned before, these block designs come from the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. (c) 2003 but these instructions are written by me.)

Have fun quilting!

  • Hi. I love that star pattern. Could you please tell me how to reduce the size to maybe, half? I’m just learning all these techniques and am eager to sew on of these. Thanks
