This year, for the quilt guild I am apart of, I am providing instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. For the month of December, we learned about the classic Ohio Star Quilt Block.
This is a very classic block that great for everyone to know how to do.
For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:
White 4 of 3 1/2 inch squares
White 6 of 4 inch squares
Color 6 of 4 inch squares
Sew:
Using the 4 inch squares, place a white square and a color square right sides together. Draw a line diagonally, corner to corner on the white fabric.
Stitch a scant 1/4 inch away from the line on both sides.
Cut on the line and press the seam to the dark side.
Trim to 3 1/2 inches square.
Repeat till you have 12 half square triangles.
Arrange the half square triangles and the 3 1/2 inch white squares to match the layout of the square.
Stitch blocks together to form rows. Press to alternating sides. Then stitch rows together and give an overall final pressing.

This is classic block that has been designed and created by many people. As I have mentioned before, these block designs come from the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. (c) 2003 but these instructions are written by me.)
Have fun quilting!
Hi Sandy!
Generations Quilt Patterns has a good tutorial for an Amish quilt Star. For the wall hanging, you could make one large one or a couple smaller ones and make it into your own little quilt for the wall. Let me know how it goes!
Thanks!
Becky
I’m looking for an Amish star wall hanging pattern. I like the block that you have shared. Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Patricia!
Look for a Sawtooth Star. I think that is what the name is. Or you can use this pattern. Just use a 6 1/2 inch square instead of the 4 half square triangles for the center.
I hope that helps!
i am looking for this star but with the center square a square that can be the focus point and not cut.
Do you know which star that is?
Hi Dharon! Thanks for your comment. The fun thing about all these blocks is they have lots of fun names to go with them. A saw tooth star is close to this one but does not have the center diamond.
