How to Make the Jagged Edge Quilt Block

Join me again this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of March, we are making the Jagged Edge Quilt Block in this easy tutorial.

Jagged Edge Quilt Block in white and navy blue

For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:

 Background Color (White)

- 17 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

- 10 of 2 x 2 inch squares

- 2 of 6 1/2 x 2 inch rectangles

- 2 of 9 1/2 x 2 inch rectangles

Color

- 17 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

 Fabric pieces cut out

Sew

Make the half square triangles.

On the back of the white 2 1/2 inch squares, draw a diagonal line, corner to corner.

White squares with line drawn on them

Pin a color 2 1/2 inch square to the white square, right sides together.

Stitch on both sides of the drawn line, a scant 1/4 inch away. This is a great time for chain piecing.

Chain pieced fabric squares

Cut on the drawn line, and press to the dark side.

Trim to be 2 inches by 2 inches square each.

Trimming half square triangles

Layout the half square triangles and the remaining pieces to match the picture.

Pieces laid out and ready to be sewn together

Stitch together the center section and each row as shown in the picture.

Three sections ready to be sewn together

Then stitch the center pieces together, then the top and bottom rows. Press.
