How to Make the Good Cheer Quilt Block

Join me this year as I provide instructions for how to make a different quilt block each month. Eventually, all these blocks will turn into a great quilt! For the month of May, we are making the Good Cheer Quilt Block.

Good Cheer Quilt Block in Royal Blue and White

This cool block is another fun one to put together!

For a 12 inch finished block (12.5 inch unfinished), you will need to cut the following:

Color

(A) 1 of 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 inch square

(H) 4 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

(C) 4 of 2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangles

(D) 12 of 2 x 2 inch squares

White

(I) 1 of 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 inch square

(B) 4 of 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch squares

(E) 8 of 2 x 3 1/2 inch rectangles

(F) 8 of 2 x 2 inch squares

(G) 1 of 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 inch square

Sew

Create the flying geese units. I use the Four-In-One Flying Geese method.  Using the color A and white B pieces, lay two small white squares on two diagonal corners of the large square, right sides together.

Draw a line, corner to corner, on the small squares, then stitch a scant 1/4" away from both sides of the line.

First step of Flying geese sewing method. Blue square with white squared on top.

Cut on the drawn line and press to the dark side.

Next, match another small square into the corner of the large triangle.

Draw a line from the corner to corner of the small square, as shown in the picture.  Stitch a scant 1/4" from the line.  Cut on the line and press to the dark side.

Next Step in Flying Geese four in one method

Trim down each flying geese unit to 3 1/2" x 2". Make sure you stay 1/4" away from the top point of the flying geese so you don't loose your point when you sew it.

Repeat the flying geese instructions using the H and I pieces.

Using the AB flying geese and HI flying geese, and C rectangles, create the  section in the picture.

Arrow shaped section made of flying geese

Create the section in the next picture by using pieces D, E, and F.  Sew the pieces into rows, then the rows into each section. Press as you go.

Next section. Looks like a small part of an Irish Chain with white and blue squares

Layout the sections and the remaining G square to match the block and stitch them together. Press.

(This is classic block that has been designed by many people. As I have mentioned before, these block designs come from the book 5500 Quilt Block Designs by Maggie Malone. (c) 2003 but these instructions are written by me.)

Have fun quilting!
