3D Pinwheel Quilt Block Tutorial

At a recent quilt guild meeting, an adorable lady shared with us how to make 3D Pinwheel quilt blocks. As I sat there, I thought I need some of that fun!  So I made a couple of pinwheel throw pillows.

You need some of that fun in your life too, so this is how you make them.

Cut 4 squares of background fabric, all the same size. It doesn't matter the size, I made them 6 inches square.

Cut 4 squares of pinwheel fabric. They can be the same size as the background fabric. I made these purple squares a 1/2 inch smaller than the background fabric to give more room for the points, so 5 1/2 inches square.

Lay them right sides together, making sure the top right corners meet up.

Two fabric squares

On the pinwheel fabric, fold the bottom left corner to meet the top right corner.

Bring the bottom right corner up to meet the top right corner. Pin the pinwheel fabric in place. The raw edges of the pinwheel fabric should meet up with the raw edges of the background fabric.

Folded fabric ready to be sewn

Repeat so there are four folded squares. Lay them out to create the pinwheel and sew the four squares together.

I didn't press the folds down so they will pop out more.

After I created the pinwheel block, I added some borders and made it into a couple throw pillow covers.

Share with me what you made with your pinwheel blocks!

Have fun quilting!
